6/19/10 A fascinating book I read a couple years back for research.
"If we complete the destruction of nature, we will have succeeded in cutting ourselves off from the source of sanity itself." excerpt from Earth on Mind. By David W. Orr
(taken from www.davidworr.com) In Earth in Mind, noted environmental educator David W. Orr focuses not on problems in education, but on the problem of education.Much of what has gone wrong with the world, he argues, is the result of inadequate and misdirected education that: alienates us from life in the name of human domination; causes students to worry about how to make a living before they know who they are; overemphasizes success and careers; separates feeling from intellect and the practical from the theoretical; deadens the sense of wonder for the created world. The crisis we face, Orr explains, is one of mind, perception, and values. It is, first and foremost, an educational challenge. The author begins by establishing the grounds for a debate about education and knowledge. He describes the problems of education from an ecological perspective, and challenges the "terrible simplifiers" who wish to substitute numbers for values. He follows with a presentation of principles for re-creating education in the broadest way possible, discussing topics such as biophilia, the disciplinary structure of knowledge, the architecture of educational buildings, and the idea of ecological intelligence. Orr concludes by presenting concrete proposals for reorganizing the curriculum to draw out our affinity for life.

1/24/10 Saturday January 23rd, I tagged along with filmmaker James Blose to Tiverton Rod and Gun Club where he was filming for a video piece. I came to document the film shoot and photograph the primitive hunters / mountain men. They were super friendly guys who care about traditions and it was fascinating to hear the history of hunting back in the 1800s. Phil Fear and Paul Higgins are the two men in the series of photographs. Phil Fear has been living in a 1840's style tent all winter in the woods of Rhode Island. Paul got into primitive hunting 30 years ago but has been very serious about it for the past six years. Paul Higgins lost his finger last year so Phil Fear made him a bear claw finger to replace it! 12/2/09 I just got another illustration assignment from the Death by Steamship boys over in Seattle. It's the time of year when I stop sleeping from work-load and time restraints....so I've been working on it here and there. I'm really stoked on it, I've been drawing with fine tip sharpies for a long time. I recently picked up a pencil allowing my drawings to become more complicated.

11/30/09 I came home today to an amazing engraving ( my cheesy signature... an M inside a Cylinder) on a glass cup given to me as a gift. Always nice to have a great friend (www.brettswenson.com).
